"The Columbia Is Coming!"

Explore Coastal Life, Past and Present with historian Jeanette Taylor

Jeanette Taylor Jeanette joins us again in 2010!

Join us for a fabulous coastal adventure as we retrace and revisit the passages and communities, both faded and flourishing, that the Columbia Coast Mission so faithfully served for 70 years. The Columbia III is still a welcome sight to island communities and you’ll enjoy the same generous hospitality the ship made famous in her early days.

Quadra Island historian and author, Jeanette Taylor, will take you back in time as she shares a wealth of tales about the hauntingly beautiful places we’ll visit, from ancient First Nations’ sites to traces of homesteads and settlements. Her informative, enthusiastic and engaging guiding makes these trips very popular!

This year we are offering two tours with Jeanette. Both tours will include frequent shore excursions by skiff, for beach walks and short hikes to explore historic sites.

The first is a new Coastal History Adventure in the Discovery Islands / Bute Inlet for 4 nights leaving from and returning to Campbell River (directions/planning ). We will visit the spectacular and historically rich Bute Inlet, a remote forty mile long fiord carved into the Coast Mountains, the tidal passages of the diverse Discovery Islands and a modern day homestead on Sonora Island where the residents (your skipper and family) run their home and business on solar/hydro power. Kayaking will also be an option on three occasions for those interested in paddling - no experience necessary!

The second is the ever popular 5 night adventure starting in Campbell River and traveling north through the myriad islands and islets of the Inside Passage and Broughton Archipelago to end in Port McNeill (directions/planning ). This tour covers many fascinating miles of coastal history, enlivened by Jeanette’s tales. We’ll visit "oldtimers" in Port Neville and Echo Bay and experience the abandoned First Nations’ village of Mi’mkwamlis. A complimentary shuttle bus will transport you back to Campbell River from Pt McNeill at the end of the tour.

Quadra Story
River City
Tidal Passages

Jeanette has worked as a historian for over 20 years, in the BC Archives and the Campbell River Museum. She is the author of River City, A History of Campbell River (1999) Tidal Passages, A History of the Discovery Islands (2008), and the newly released The Quadra Story, A History of Quadra Island (2009).

"Sometimes, a book of local history is much more than that--it is a labour of love as well. That's the case with Tidal Passages, a product of three decades of research by Jeanette Taylor.... She gathered everything into a fascinating island-by-island history that is not only trustworthy, it is highly readable to boot. It's a superb effort, and the reader is left with the sense that Taylor could have filled 1,000 pages with all of the material that she has collected.... It is a valuable addition to any library of B.C. coastal history, and its appeal will not be limited to people with roots on the islands."
