"The Columbia Is Coming!"

Explore Coastal Life, Past and Present with historian Jeanette Taylor

Jeanette joins us again in 2010! This was originally a "one-off" tour in 2006 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the launching of the Columbia III, but the trip filled so quickly that we have been running her tours every year since. Jeanette's informative, enthusiastic and engaging guiding makes these tours very popular. Join us in a relaxed cruise, as we again retrace and revisit the passages and communities, both faded and flourishing, that the Columbia Coast Mission so faithfully served for 70 years.

Cruising Group Many of our ports of call on Jeanette’s Desolation Sound and Broughton Archipelago tours are familiar stops for the Columbia III. The ship served these isolated places as a hospital and mission ship over 50 years ago. The elegant Columbia III is still a welcome sight as we move at a leisurely pace among the islands and inlets. You'll enjoy the same generous hospitality the ship made famous in her days with the Columbia Coast Mission. Our crew provides gourmet dining, lively conversation and comfortable quarters.

We'll visit historical sights in the Desolation Sound area including a remote gravesite near Toba Inlet, an abandoned First Nations village recorded by Captain Vancouver in the 1800's and numerous pictographs on Cortes, West Redonda and Quadra Islands. We'll also visit a modern-day homestead on Sonora Island where the residents (your skipper and family) run their home and business on solar power.

Columbia on wharf Join us to immerse yourself in the wildlife, sea and mountains of this exceptional part of the coast. You'll carry home rich memories of adventures and impressive characters.

Testimonials from Jeannette's tours: See also the testimonial posted by a 2007 guest.

"Many thanks for the great trip to add to our store of memories. The crew were very knowledgeable and accommodating. The food has been delicious and abundant. Jeanette's store of stories and history of the islands is impressive. Fern and family's love of this area is evident. "
Cic and Helen, Victoria B.C.

"This was our first boat trip. We found the scenery spectacular, the guide most informative and responsive to any questions we had. The food was superb and the crew made us feel almost like family. The small group size (10) helped the group to really come together."
Gerry and Rosalene, Victoria B.C.

"Difficult for me to express words beyond perfection in all areas of our trip with your group."
Ed. Victoria B.C.

"Ken and Barb loved the trip, the Columbia, the crew, the guide, the food, the wine - WOW - one excellent adventure!"
Qualicum Beach, B.C.

"For seven days and seven nights
we thrilled to scenes of memorable delight.
Both visual and edible and sometimes spiritual too,
our group was guided by the four Campbell crew.
Up muddy beach and up overgrown trail,
our historian leader did prevail!
Thanks to Ross, Fern, Miray, Farlyn and Jeanette."

"Were your ears burning for the next couple of hours as we extolled the virtues of all of you and the trip in general en route home? What a trip!"
Joan Burrows

"To list the superlatives would take too long, so we simply offer a deep and heartfelt thanks for a wonderful experience, and for us a step back in time."

Our tour leader, Jeanette Taylor has a passion for coastal history and has worked in the history field for over 20 years, starting with a job at the BC Archives that led to her work as a curator and interpreter at the Campbell River Museum. Her first book, River City, A History of Campbell River and the Discovery Islands (1999), was based on years of research and interviews, as was a second book, Exploring Quadra Island, Heritage Sites and Hiking Trails (2001). She's currently at work on a third book, a history of the Discovery Islands and adjacent inlets.

River City "A riveting saga as well as an important historical record, River City comes from a writer who knows and loves the area's history (and who brings fresh insights into life and work along the Discovery Coast)." -Campbell River Courier-Islander
