Desolation Sound Kayak Tour

Desolation Sound Kayak Tour

Overview

Kayak Couple Surrounded by the towering snow-capped Coast Mountains and the lush evergreen slopes of East Redonda Island, Desolation Sound is situated in a truly spectacular setting. With its exceptionally warm waters and numerous islands, bays, and lagoons, it provides a perfect sea kayak experience. A visit to the unique sea bird nesting colony of Mitlenatch Island, with it's carpets of wild flowers, is an additional highlight of this tour.

"Definitely was a trip of a life time! Such a warm and thoughtful family! Where else can you luxuriate in music of the Irish, delicacies from the chef, comfortable accommodations and the hearts and souls of wonderful people! So creative and warm!"
Marjorie, Victoria B.C.

"A totally enjoyable trip. Food and fellowship superb. The Columbia III is an incredibly beautiful ship as is the area she plies. The food and service was marvelous. All were extremely knowledgeable and informative. Great Trip! "
Carol, B.C.

Departing Campbell River in the late afternoon aboard our mothership, the Columbia III, we head towards the awe inspiring beauty of Desolation Sound, leaving the cares of civilization behind. Throughout our journey we use the Columbia III as our luxurious floating home, planning each day around a kayak excursion and each night anchoring in a new cove with a stunning view. Taking advantage of our kayak's silent manoeuvrability and shallow draft we can explore every nook and cranny that captures our fancy. We intimately view the intertidal marine life and keep our eyes open for marine mammals and sea birds.

"What a fabulous holiday you hosted for us. All our fears ‘flew out the door” the minute we were on board the Columbia III. What a wonderfully warm, gracious and talented family you all are! The scenery was spectacular - excellent choices, the boat was perfectly cozy and artistically beautiful, scrumptious gourmet meals and unbelievable live Celtic music!! What more could anyone ask for on a holiday?!! Please book us for your next art-adventure!"
Bob and Marjorie, Victoria B.C. 2007

"You have enriched my life."
Don, Washington

The possibilities for each day are infinitely varied and delightful. Choices are made depending on our group's needs and desires. Usually we launch our colourful kayak flotilla shortly after breakfast and enjoy a morning's paddle before finding the perfect spot to relax and indulge in a delicious homemade midday meal. Desolation Sound is known for its many warm and sparkling freshwater lakes, often only a short stroll through the forest from the sea, so lunch may be accompanied by a refreshing swim.

Kayaks in the mist The afternoons will involve either more paddling, more swimming, a visit to a harbour seal colony or maybe a snooze in the sun before we kayak to the Columbia III, awaiting us in a new location. In this way no backtracking is necessary; instead we use our energy to continually explore new areas.

Back on board our mothership, complete with hot showers, we begin our evening of gourmet food, conversation, conviviality and relaxation. If the conditions are right, a night paddle is an option where you may witness the truly astounding phenomenon of bioluminescence.

The Columbia III returns to Campbell River in the early afternoon after an event filled week.

"Creative silence, stunning natural beauty, warm camaraderie - all wrapped in the loving embrace of the family of the Columbia III. It does not get any better!"
David, California
